Each stock of a corn plant produces only two ears of corn. In Mayan iconography, the branches of a corn stock produce a living human head as a substitution for the grains of maize. This references the creation myth where human flesh was shaped from maize dough, as described in the Popol Vuh, the sacred text of the Quiche Maya.
